Mangal Dosha Checker
Mangal (kuja) dosha refers to Mars placed in houses 1, 4, 7, 8, or 12 from the lagna or the Moon. This checker computes it precisely — and, unlike most, also checks the classical softening factors, because the tradition itself never treated the dosha as a simple yes or no. You will get an honest reading, never a scare.
Mangal dosha, honestly
More families have been hurt by this one idea than by any other in popular astrology. It is worth setting out plainly what the tradition actually says, what it does not say, and why the gap between the two has become an industry.
What the condition is
Mars — mangal, or kuja — is the planet of energy, appetite, courage and conflict. When it occupies the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant or the Moon, classical texts note a tendency toward friction in domestic and marital life. That is the whole of the claim. It is a statement about temperament and its effect on close quarters, not a prophecy of disaster.
The reasoning is fairly transparent once you know the house meanings. The 1st is the self, the 4th is home and peace of mind, the 7th is the spouse, the 8th is longevity and upheaval, the 12th is loss and expenditure. A planet associated with heat and assertion, placed in the areas of life that most reward patience, was read as a source of strain.
The arithmetic nobody mentions
Five houses out of twelve is roughly forty percent of all birth charts from the ascendant alone. Counting from the Moon as well pushes the figure higher still — by most estimates somewhere between half and two-thirds of people qualify under one reading or another. Any description that fits most of the population is not identifying an affliction. It is describing something close to the normal condition.
The tradition argues with itself
Classical sources list an unusually long set of cancellations, or parihara: Mars in its own signs of Aries and Scorpio, Mars exalted in Capricorn, Mars aspected by Jupiter, Mars in particular signs in particular houses, and — most tellingly — both partners carrying the dosha, which is held to cancel it entirely. Different regional traditions also disagree about whether to count the 2nd house, and about whether to read from the Moon at all.
A doctrine with that many exceptions and that much internal disagreement was never intended as a binary test. It was one consideration among dozens, weighed by an astrologer looking at a whole chart. Reducing it to a yes-or-no label on a website — which is what most manglik checkers do — misrepresents the source material.
Where this turns harmful
The practical damage is well documented: matches called off, women in particular labelled unmarriageable, families spending significant money on remedial ceremonies, and a whole commercial layer of poojas, gemstones and symbolic marriages sold to people who have been frightened first. Some of these practices are genuinely traditional; the fear-based sale of them is not.
Our position is straightforward. We will compute the condition accurately, tell you the cancellations that apply in your chart, and put the result in proportion. We will never describe a chart as cursed, and we will never sell you a remedy. If you have been told otherwise by someone who then quoted a price, that is worth weighing carefully.
Common questions
What exactly is mangal dosha?
It is the classical term for Mars occupying the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house — counted from the ascendant, and in most traditions also from the Moon. Mangal means Mars; kuja is another name for the same planet, so kuja dosha and manglik dosha describe the identical condition. The houses in question are the ones associated with self, home, marriage, longevity and loss, which is why the tradition connected Mars there with friction in domestic life.
How common is it?
Far more common than the anxiety around it suggests. Mars spends roughly equal time in each of the twelve houses, so five of twelve — about forty percent of all charts — qualify from the ascendant alone. Once you also count from the Moon, as most astrologers do, the proportion rises further. A condition that a large share of the population shares is not a rare affliction, and it plainly does not prevent those people from marrying happily.
What cancels mangal dosha?
Classical texts list many cancellations, and this checker looks for the common ones: Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted in Capricorn; Mars in the sign of Cancer or Leo in certain houses; Mars aspected by or conjoined with Jupiter; both partners having the dosha, which is traditionally held to neutralise it; and the dosha being read from a chart with a debilitated or weak Mars. The existence of such a long list of exemptions is itself the tradition telling you it never meant the dosha as a simple verdict.
Can a manglik marry a non-manglik?
Yes. People do, constantly, and have always done so. The traditional advice that both partners should share the dosha is one recommendation from one strand of a large and internally disagreeing tradition — not a rule of nature. Compatibility between two people rests on values, communication, circumstance and effort. If a family is being pressured to break off a match over this, it is worth knowing that many respected astrologers regard the dosha as heavily overstated in modern practice.
Should I pay for a remedy to remove it?
No. This is the part of the subject where real harm gets done. There is no reputable basis for charging a fee to remove a planetary condition, and the market for manglik remedies — special poojas, kumbh vivah ceremonies, expensive gemstones — runs on fear rather than on any classical requirement. If someone describes your chart as cursed and then offers to sell the cure, they have told you more about their business model than about your chart.
Do I need an accurate birth time for this?
For the reading from the ascendant, yes — the lagna changes roughly every two hours, so the house Mars occupies from it depends on your birth time. The reading from the Moon is much more stable, since the Moon takes over two days to change sign. If your time is uncertain, treat the from-Moon result as the reliable half and the from-lagna result as provisional. The checker labels both separately for exactly this reason.
