Karma and past life in your chart

Vedic astrology reads a birth chart as a record of karma: what you bring with you, where this life pulls you, the merit you carry forward and the work that is yours. Enter your birth details to see the five indicators the tradition uses, read from your own chart. Everything is worked out in your browser; your birth details are never sent to us.

Honest from the start: there is no evidence that a chart shows a past life. Read this the way you would read a thoughtful question, not a verdict.

Past lives in astrology: what the tradition says, and what it can’t

Rebirth sits at the centre of the traditions Vedic astrology comes from, so it is no surprise that the chart is read as a record of earlier lives. What follows is that reading, set out plainly, and then the limits of it.

The five indicators

Ketu, the Moon’s south node, is read as what you bring with you: abilities so familiar that they come easily, and sometimes no longer satisfy. Rahu, always exactly opposite, is where this life pulls you — unfamiliar, absorbing, and where growth happens. The 5th house and its lord show purva punya, merit carried forward. Saturn shows the work that is yours: where patience and steady effort are asked for. In the Jaimini system the Atmakaraka, the planet furthest through its sign, is the soul’s main lesson.

What it can’t do

No study has shown that charts reveal past lives, or that past lives exist. Past-life claims cannot be checked or disproved, which is exactly what makes them easy to sell. A reading that tells you who you were — a soldier, a queen, a priest — is a story, not a calculation, and we don’t write them.

Where the harm is

The most common misuse is fear: a “past-life curse” or “karmic debt” that happens to need a paid puja, gemstone or ritual to clear. Nothing in a chart requires buying anything. If you have been told otherwise, the free mangal dosha checker and our methodology show how we approach these claims.

How to use it well

Treat each placement as a question. “Ketu in the 10th” becomes “what would my work look like if recognition didn’t matter?” That question is useful whether or not you believe in rebirth — which is why every reading above ends with one.

Common questions

Can astrology really tell me about my past life?

Vedic astrology is built on karma and rebirth, so it does make claims about what you carry from earlier lives — mostly through Ketu, the 5th house and Saturn. But there is no evidence that past lives exist or that a chart can show one, and such claims can't be checked. This page shows what the tradition says, for reflection, and is honest that it is belief rather than evidence.

What does Ketu show in a birth chart?

Tradition reads Ketu, the south node of the Moon, as what you bring with you: skills and habits that come easily, sometimes so easily that they no longer satisfy. Its house shows the area of life where that ease, and that detachment, appear. Rahu always sits exactly opposite and shows where this life pulls you to grow.

What is purva punya?

Purva punya means 'earlier merit' — the good karma the tradition says you carry forward. It is read from the 5th house and especially from where the 5th house's lord sits. Classical texts tie it to intelligence, creativity, children and a sense of being looked after.

What is the Atmakaraka?

In the Jaimini system, the Atmakaraka — the 'soul's significator' — is the planet that has travelled furthest through its sign. It is read as the soul's main lesson in this life. Without a birth time the Moon's exact degree is uncertain, so the Atmakaraka can be provisional; this tool says when that is the case.

Someone said I have a past-life curse or karmic debt. Is that true?

No chart shows a curse, and nobody can verify a past-life debt. These phrases are usually the start of a sales pitch for a puja, gemstone or remedy. If someone describes your past life as the cause of your problems and then offers to sell the cure, they have told you about their business, not your karma.

What about Nadi astrology and the D60 chart?

Nadi readers say ancient palm-leaf manuscripts describe your past life in detail; there is no independent evidence for this. The D60 (shashtiamsha) divisional chart is classically linked to past-life karma, but it changes about every two minutes of birth time, so almost no one's birth time is accurate enough to read it. We don't read either.

Do I need my exact birth time?

It helps. With a birth time, houses are counted from your ascendant. Without one, this tool counts from your Moon sign — a classical alternative — and the Ketu, Rahu and Saturn signs are still right, since they move slowly. If your Moon was near the edge of a sign that day, the tool says so, because then even the Moon sign can differ. The Atmakaraka is marked provisional when the Moon could change it.
