How to read your birth chart
A birth chart is not a prediction. It is a map of the sky at one moment, drawn from where you were standing. What follows is how to read the one above without needing anyone to interpret it for you.
Start with three things, not thirty
Most people open a chart, see nine planets in twelve houses, and close it again. The way in is to ignore almost all of it at first and look at three placements.
Your lagna, or ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It sets the entire house structure of the chart, and it describes how you meet the world — your manner, your instinct on arrival, the version of you a stranger meets first. Because the ascendant changes roughly every two hours, it is the placement most sensitive to an inaccurate birth time.
Your Moon sign, or rāśi, is where Vedic astrology looks for the mind. This is the single biggest departure from Western practice: when an Indian astrologer asks your sign, they almost always mean this one, not your Sun sign. Daily and monthly predictions in the Vedic tradition are calculated from the Moon. It describes your emotional weather — what settles you, what unsettles you, what you need in order to feel safe.
Your current mahādaśā is the planetary period you are living through right now. The chart describes tendencies that are true your whole life; the dasha describes which of them are switched on at the moment. If your chart feels like it describes someone else, the dasha is usually why.
Then read the houses
Each of the twelve houses governs an area of life — the 2nd is money and family and speech, the 7th is partnership, the 10th is career and public standing. A planet sitting in a house brings its own nature to that area. Mars in the 10th is not the same ambition as Saturn in the 10th: one is fast and combative, the other slow and structural, but both put energy into career.
The order of reading is worth keeping: the planet says what, the sign says how, the house says where. Venus tells you about love and value; Venus in Capricorn tells you it is expressed through reliability rather than declaration; Venus in Capricorn in the 4th house tells you that plays out at home.
What the strength labels mean
You may see a planet marked exalted, debilitated, or in its own sign. These describe how comfortably a planet expresses in the sign it occupies, and they are the source of a lot of unnecessary fear. A debilitated planet is not a broken one — it is a planet working in an unfamiliar style, which in practice usually means those qualities arrive later, or through deliberate effort, rather than easily. Classical texts also list numerous cancellations for debilitation. No single placement in a chart is a verdict on a life.
Why we won't tell you what will happen
Every calculation on this page is deterministic astronomy — where the planets actually were, to a fraction of a degree. The interpretation layered on top is a two-thousand-year-old symbolic tradition, and it is not the same kind of claim. We have deliberately written the interpretations to describe tendencies rather than events, and we will not sell you a remedy for a problem we invented. If a site tells you your chart contains a curse that only their pooja can lift, you are being sold fear, not astrology.
A note on birth time
If you can, find your birth certificate or hospital record. A time that is wrong by two hours can move your ascendant a whole sign and shift every house in the chart with it. A time that is wrong by ten minutes rarely matters. If no record exists, use the calculator with the time-unknown box ticked and treat the Moon sign, nakshatra and planetary signs as solid while treating the houses as provisional — that is still most of a chart.
Common questions
What if I don't know my exact birth time?
Tick the “I don't know my birth time” box and the calculator uses noon. Your Moon sign, nakshatra and all nine planetary signs will almost always still be correct, because the slowest-moving of them takes weeks to change sign and the Moon itself takes about two and a quarter days. What you lose is the ascendant and therefore the houses, since the ascendant moves through all twelve signs every twenty-four hours. If your birth certificate or hospital record has a time, it is worth finding — it roughly doubles what a chart can tell you.
Why is my sign different from the one I've always known?
Because Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, measured against the actual stars, while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, measured from the March equinox. The two were aligned around 285 CE and have drifted apart since at roughly one degree every 72 years — currently about 24 degrees, or most of a whole sign. So a great many people who are Leo in a Western horoscope are Cancer in a Vedic one. Neither system is a mistake; they are measuring from different reference points and answering slightly different questions.
Which ayanamsa do you use?
Lahiri, also called Chitrapaksha — the ayanamsa adopted by the Indian government's Calendar Reform Committee and the standard in most of India. It is defined so that the star Spica (Chitra) sits at 180 degrees of sidereal longitude. We show the exact value used for your birth date in the results so you can compare it against any other software.
Do you use whole-sign houses or another system?
Whole-sign houses, which is the classical Vedic default: the entire sign containing your ascendant becomes the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on. This is why every house in the chart spans exactly thirty degrees. Some software offers Placidus or Koch, which are Western systems that produce unequal houses — those will disagree with this chart and with most Indian astrologers.
Are my birth details stored anywhere?
No. The chart is computed in your browser, and your date, time and place are never sent to our servers or saved in a database. The only thing that reaches us is the city name you type into the place search, which is passed to a geocoding service to look up coordinates. Only if you sign in and choose to save a chart are its details stored, encrypted, in your account — you can delete them any time. If you join the weekly email list we store the email address you give us and nothing else.
How accurate are the planetary positions?
Positions come from the astronomy-engine library, which implements the VSOP87 planetary theory and a version of Brown's lunar theory and agrees with NASA JPL ephemerides to about an arcminute for the visible planets across our supported range of 1900 to 2100. In practice the accuracy of your chart is limited by the accuracy of your recorded birth time, not by the astronomy.
What is a vimshottari dasha and why does it matter?
It is a 120-year cycle of planetary periods, and it is how Vedic astrology handles timing. Where the birth chart says what tendencies exist, the dasha says when they are most active. Which period you were born into is determined by the exact position of your Moon within its nakshatra, which is why a reliable birth time matters for it. We show the major periods, called mahadashas, with the dates they run.
Is this the same as a kundli or a janam patrika?
Yes. Kundli, janam kundali, janam patrika, horoscope and birth chart all describe the same thing: a map of where the planets were at the moment and place you were born. The name changes by region and language; the chart does not.
