Moon Sign Calculator

In Vedic astrology your moon sign — the rāśi — matters more than your sun sign. It is the seat of mind and feeling, the sign your dasha predictions are read from, and the one traditional astrologers ask for first. Enter your birth details to find yours, computed from the Moon’s precise sidereal position.

Why the Moon matters more here

If you take one idea away from Vedic astrology, make it this one: the tradition reads your life from the Moon, not the Sun. Almost every difference you will notice between an Indian horoscope and a Western one follows from that single choice.

The Moon as the mind

In classical Indian thought the Moon governs manas — the mind in its receptive, feeling, remembering aspect. The Sun governs atman, the self and its vitality. Both matter, but when the question is how someone experiences their life from the inside, the tradition looks at the Moon. Your moon sign describes how you process feeling, what soothes you, what you need in order to feel secure, and how you behave when you are tired or under pressure and the public version of you slips.

This is also why the Moon is the anchor for prediction. Vimshottari dasha, the main timing system, is calculated entirely from the Moon's position. Gochara, or transit reading, measures where planets are moving relative to your moon sign rather than your ascendant. The tools that say when in Vedic astrology nearly all start from the Moon.

Why yours may not be the sign you expected

Two things routinely surprise people here. The first is simply that most of us grew up knowing our sun sign, so a moon sign is new information about a different planet. The second is the ayanamsa: the sidereal zodiac used in India is currently about twenty-four degrees behind the tropical zodiac used in the West, because the equinox point drifts against the stars at roughly a degree every seventy-two years. Over the two millennia since the systems were aligned, that has added up to most of a sign.

The practical result is that a large majority of people find their Vedic sign sits one place earlier than their Western one. Neither is a miscalculation. They are two coordinate systems with different zero points, and both are internally consistent.

How to use your moon sign

If you read daily or weekly horoscopes in the Indian tradition, read them for your moon sign rather than your sun sign — that is what they were computed for, and it is the most common reason people find such predictions do not fit. If you are looking at compatibility, note that guna milan is calculated almost entirely from the two Moons. And if you are reading your own chart, use the moon sign as the emotional baseline against which the rest of the chart is interpreted.

One caution worth holding: a moon sign is not a personality test, and it is not a diagnosis. It describes a tendency in how feeling moves through a person. Plenty of people recognise themselves in it, and plenty of people do not — which is a reasonable thing to notice rather than a failure on your part.

Common questions

What is the difference between a moon sign and a sun sign?

Your sun sign is where the Sun sat at your birth — it changes once a month and is what Western newspaper horoscopes use. Your moon sign is where the Moon sat, which changes every two and a quarter days. Vedic astrology treats the Moon as the significator of the mind, so the moon sign describes your emotional and mental nature, and it is the sign Vedic predictions are calculated from. When an Indian astrologer asks what your rāśi is, this is what they mean.

Why is my Vedic moon sign different from my Western one?

Two separate reasons can be at work. First, most people know their sun sign, not their moon sign, so they are comparing two different planets. Second, Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac measured against the fixed stars, while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac measured from the equinox. The two have drifted about twenty-four degrees apart, so even the same planet often lands one sign earlier in a Vedic chart.

Do I need my birth time?

Not usually. The Moon stays in one sign for roughly two and a quarter days, so for most births any time of day gives the same answer, and this calculator uses noon when you leave the time blank. The exception is a birth that happened within a few hours of a sign change — in that case the result will differ depending on the time, and you would need the real one to be certain.

What is a rāśi?

Rāśi is simply the Sanskrit word for a zodiac sign, and in everyday Indian usage rāśi almost always means the moon sign specifically. Chandra rāśi and janma rāśi mean the same thing. If someone asks for your rāśi before a puja or a matchmaking conversation, they want the sign your Moon was in.

Which moon sign is the best one?

None of them, though the Moon does have signs it is classically considered comfortable in: it is exalted in Taurus, rules Cancer, and is said to be debilitated in Scorpio. Those are statements about how easily lunar qualities express themselves, not about the quality of a person's life. A Scorpio Moon is not a worse Moon — it is a deeper and more private one.
