About the festival
Akshaya Tritiya, also called Akha Teej, falls on the third day of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha. Akshaya means "that which does not diminish", and the day is held to be so auspicious that it needs no separate muhūrta: it is one of the "sade teen" (three and a half) muhūrtas of the year, with Gudi Padwa, Vijayadashami and half of Bali Pratipada. It is associated with the birth of Parashurama, the beginning of the Treta Yuga, and the day Vyasa is said to have begun dictating the Mahabharata to Ganesha.
Traditionally it is a day for charity — water, grain, clothes, fans and food given to those who need them in the summer heat — and for beginning things meant to last: a business, a house, a course of study, a marriage. In recent decades it has also become a popular day to buy gold; that is a modern custom rather than a requirement, and the older texts put the emphasis on giving.
The day is reckoned by the Tritiya in the forenoon. Jains keep it as the day Rishabhanatha broke his year-long fast with sugarcane juice.
