The tithi changes at the same instant everywhere, but sunrise, sunset, midnight and moonrise are local — so the day a festival falls on can differ between cities, especially abroad.

About the festival

Govardhan Puja falls on the first day of the bright fortnight of Kartika, usually the day after Diwali. It recalls the story of Krishna lifting Govardhan hill on his little finger to shelter the people and cattle of Braj from Indra's storms, and his teaching that the hill, the land and the cows that sustain a village deserve worship.

Families build a small Govardhan of cow dung or clay in the courtyard, decorate it, and walk around it. Temples prepare Annakut, "a mountain of food" — often more than fifty dishes — offered to Krishna and then shared with everyone who comes. Cattle are bathed and decorated. In Gujarat the same day is the Gujarati New Year (Bestu Varas), in Maharashtra and Karnataka it is Bali Pratipada, honouring King Bali, and in some places it is Vishwakarma Puja.

When Amavasya is still current at the sunrise after Diwali, Govardhan Puja moves one day later, leaving a gap day between the two.

In New Delhi, Govardhan Puja 2026 is on Tuesday, 10 November 2026. Shukla Pratipada: 12:33 PM, 9 Nov → 2:00 PM, 10 Nov.

What is the Morning Puja (while Pratipada lasts) for Govardhan Puja 2026?

For New Delhi: 6:40 AM – 12:05 PM. It is computed from the city's own sunrise and sunset, so other cities differ by a few minutes or more.

Is Govardhan Puja on the same date in every city?

Mostly, but not everywhere: in 2026 the date differs in London, New York, Toronto, San Francisco Bay Area, because local sunrise, sunset or moonrise falls on the other side of the tithi change there.

Why is there sometimes a day's gap between Diwali and Govardhan Puja?

Govardhan Puja needs Pratipada at sunrise. If the Diwali Amavasya is still running at the next sunrise, that day is still Amavasya, and Govardhan Puja falls the day after.
