Chhath Puja 2026 Date and Sandhya Arghya (sunset)
In 2026, Chhath Puja in New Delhi falls on Sunday, 15 November 2026. Four days of worship of the Sun and Chhathi Maiya, at the riverbank.
Sandhya Arghya (sunset): Sunset on Shashthi (sandhyā arghya) and sunrise the next morning (uṣā arghya).
How the date is decided
Kartika Shukla Shashthi — the day Shashthi is current at sunrise (udaya tithi). Its evening is the sandhyā arghya, the offering to the setting Sun, and the next sunrise the uṣā arghya that ends the fast. The four-day observance starts two days earlier with Nahay Khay.

About the festival
Chhath is a four-day festival of the Sun and Chhathi Maiya, kept six days after Diwali, on Kartika Shukla Shashthi. It belongs above all to Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh, and to the Nepali Terai, and is now celebrated wherever families from those regions live — on the ghats of Delhi, Mumbai's beaches, and riverbanks abroad.
The days are Nahay Khay (a ritual bath and a simple meal), Kharna (a day-long fast ended in the evening with rice kheer and roti), the sandhyā arghya on Shashthi, when the fasting devotees stand in the water at sunset to offer arghya to the setting Sun, and the uṣā arghya at sunrise the next morning, after which the fast — some thirty-six hours without water — is broken. Offerings of thekua, fruit and sugarcane are carried in bamboo baskets, and the songs of Chhath fill the evenings. It is known for its simplicity, its cleanliness and the absence of priests or idols.
The times that matter are sunset on Shashthi and sunrise the next morning; both are shown for the city you choose.
