Ghatasthapana Window: The morning, sunrise to midday, for as long as the tithi lasts.

How the date is decided

Begins on Ashvin Shukla Pratipada, the day Pratipada is current at sunrise; Ghatasthapana is done in the morning while Pratipada lasts. If Pratipada touches no sunrise (a short, kshaya tithi), the day it falls in.

This year the tithi is short and touches the required time on no day at all, so the festival is kept on the day that holds most of it.

The tithi changes at the same instant everywhere, but sunrise, sunset, midnight and moonrise are local — so the day a festival falls on can differ between cities, especially abroad.

About the festival

Sharad Navratri, the autumn Navratri, is nine nights devoted to the Goddess in her many forms, from the first day of the bright fortnight of Ashvin. Each day honours one of the Navadurga — Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri — and the festival ends with Dussehra on the tenth day.

It begins with Ghatasthapana: a pot of water is installed on a bed of soil sown with barley, invoking the Goddess, and a lamp is often kept burning for the nine days. Many people fast or eat simple sattvic food. In Gujarat the nights are for garba and dandiya; in Bengal, Odisha and Assam the last days are Durga Puja, with images in pandals; in the north, Ramlila performances build to Dussehra; and on Ashtami or Navami young girls are honoured as the Goddess in kanya puja.

Ghatasthapana is done in the morning while Pratipada lasts. When Pratipada is too short to touch a sunrise, Navratri begins on the day it falls in.

What is the Ghatasthapana Window for Sharad Navratri 2027?

When should Ghatasthapana be done?

In the morning of the first day, while Pratipada tithi lasts — traditionally in the first third of the day, avoiding Chitra nakshatra and Vaidhriti yoga where possible. If that is not possible, the Abhijit muhūrta around midday is the usual alternative. The window on this page is sunrise to midday, cut to when Pratipada actually runs.
