The tithi changes at the same instant everywhere, but sunrise, sunset, midnight and moonrise are local — so the day a festival falls on can differ between cities, especially abroad.

About the festival

Karva Chauth falls on the fourth day of the waning Moon in Kartika (Ashvin in the amanta calendar), eleven days before Diwali. Married women — and increasingly couples together — keep a fast from before sunrise until the Moon rises, praying for the long life and wellbeing of their spouses. It is kept most widely in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

The day begins with sargi, a pre-dawn meal often prepared by the mother-in-law. In the evening women gather in their finery, with mehndi on their hands, to hear the Karva Chauth story and pass the karva — an earthen pot with a spout — around the circle. When the Moon rises they look at it through a sieve, offer water to it from the karva, then look at their husband, who offers the first sip of water and bite of food.

Because the fast ends with the Moon, the date is the day on which Chaturthi is current at moonrise, and the local moonrise time is the time most people want to know.
