About the festival
Raksha Bandhan falls on Shravana Purnima, the full moon of the monsoon month. A sister ties a rakhi — a thread of protection — on her brother's wrist, applies tilak, offers sweets and prays for his wellbeing; he gives a gift and a promise to stand by her. Today the bond is often extended to cousins, close friends and sisters tying rakhis on each other, and to soldiers, neighbours and trees.
The older form of the rite was a raksha sutra tied by priests on their patrons. The day is also Shravani Upakarma, when many communities renew the sacred thread, and in coastal Maharashtra and Gujarat it is Narali Purnima, when fishing communities offer a coconut to the sea at the end of the monsoon.
Traditionally the rakhi is tied in the afternoon (aparāhṇa) of Purnima, but never during Bhadra, the first half of the tithi. That is why this page shows the time from the end of Bhadra, and why in some years the muhūrat begins late in the evening.
