About the festival

Hanuman Jayanti — many now prefer Hanuman Janmotsav, since Hanuman is held to be ever-living — celebrates the birth of Hanuman, the devotee of Rama renowned for strength, loyalty and humility. In north and central India it falls on Chaitra Purnima, the full moon a week after Ram Navami.

Temples open before dawn, because Hanuman is traditionally said to have been born at sunrise. Devotees recite the Hanuman Chalisa and the Sundarkand, offer sindoor and jasmine oil to Hanuman's image, and distribute prasad such as boondi laddoos. Processions with saffron flags are common, and many people fast for the day.

The date differs by region. Parts of north and west India also keep Hanuman's birth on Kartika Krishna Chaturdashi, the day before Diwali; Tamil Nadu and Kerala keep Hanumath Jayanthi in Margashirsha; Andhra Pradesh and Telangana end a forty-one-day observance in Vaishakha.
