Nishita Puja Time: Niśītha: the eighth of the fifteen night muhūrtas, around local midnight.

How the date is decided

Ashtami of the waning fortnight (Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami purnimanta, Shravana Krishna Ashtami amanta), on the night the Ashtami covers midnight (niśītha) — the Smarta rule, since Krishna was born at midnight under Rohini nakshatra. One exception: if the next day begins in Ashtami and Rohini is rising at that night's midnight (Jayanti yoga), the next night is taken. Vaishnava and ISKCON calendars take the day Ashtami is current at sunrise; when the two differ, both are shown.

This year Ashtami covers the previous midnight, but this night begins in Ashtami at sunrise and has Rohini at midnight (Jayanti yoga), so this night is kept.

The tithi changes at the same instant everywhere, but sunrise, sunset, midnight and moonrise are local — so the day a festival falls on can differ between cities, especially abroad.

About the festival

Krishna Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, on the eighth day of the waning Moon in Bhadrapada (Shravana in the amanta calendar). The story places his birth at midnight, under Rohini nakshatra, in a prison cell in Mathura, from where his father Vasudeva carried him across the flooded Yamuna to safety in Gokul.

Devotees fast through the day and keep vigil, singing bhajans and reading from the Bhagavata Purana. At midnight the image of baby Krishna is bathed, dressed and placed in a decorated cradle, and the fast is broken with prasad — panjiri, makhan-mishri and fruit. Temples in Mathura and Vrindavan stage jhankis of his childhood; in Maharashtra the next day is Dahi Handi, when human pyramids climb to break a pot of curd hung high above the street.

Two calendars are in use. The Smarta date is the night on which Ashtami covers midnight; Vaishnava calendars, including ISKCON, use the Ashtami current at sunrise. When they differ, both dates are shown here.

Common questions

When is Krishna Janmashtami 2027?

In New Delhi, Krishna Janmashtami 2027 is on Wednesday, 25 August 2027. Krishna Ashtami: 8:25 PM, 24 Aug → 7:20 PM, 25 Aug.

What is the Nishita Puja Time for Krishna Janmashtami 2027?

For New Delhi: 12:01 AM – 12:46 AM, 26 Aug. It is computed from the city's own sunrise and sunset, so other cities differ by a few minutes or more.

Is Krishna Janmashtami on the same date in every city?

Mostly, but not everywhere: in 2027 the date differs in San Francisco Bay Area, because local sunrise, sunset or moonrise falls on the other side of the tithi change there.

Why are there two Janmashtami dates in some years?

The Smarta tradition keeps the night when the Ashtami tithi covers midnight, the hour of Krishna's birth. Vaishnava traditions, including ISKCON, keep the day on which Ashtami is current at sunrise and avoid an Ashtami mixed with Saptami. When Ashtami begins late at night, the two rules give consecutive days.
