Holika Dahan Muhurat: Pradosh: the first fifth of the night after sunset, while the tithi lasts.

Bhadra: 6:22 PM, 21 Mar to 5:15 AM, 22 Mar.

How the date is decided

Holika Dahan is on Phalguna Purnima, in the pradosh after sunset, outside Bhadra (the first half of Purnima). If Bhadra covers the evening but ends before midnight, the fire is lit once it ends. If Bhadra runs past midnight and Purnima lasts at least three and a half praharas into the next day, the fire moves to the next evening (the Dharmasindhu rule). Rangwali Holi (Dhulandi) is the following morning.

This year Bhadra lasts through the whole night, and Purnima ends too early next day to move the fire. Almanacs then light it either in the last part of Bhadra (Bhadra punchha) or after Bhadra ends near dawn; follow the time your local temple or family priest gives. Some calendars move Holika Dahan to the next evening instead.

The tithi changes at the same instant everywhere, but sunrise, sunset, midnight and moonrise are local — so the day a festival falls on can differ between cities, especially abroad.

About the festival

Holi is two festivals in sequence. On the evening of Phalguna Purnima, Holika Dahan is lit: a bonfire recalling the story of Prahlad, the young devotee of Vishnu who sat unharmed in the fire while his aunt Holika, who was meant to be protected from it, burned. Families walk around the fire, offer new grain, coconut and cow-dung cakes, and take home a little of its warmth.

The next morning is Rangwali Holi, also called Dhulandi or Dhuleti — the day of colours, water and gulal, of visiting friends and settling old quarrels. In Braj, around Mathura and Vrindavan, the celebrations run for days and include Lathmar Holi at Barsana. In Bengal and Odisha the same full moon is Dol Purnima, with Krishna's image carried on a swing.

The fire is lit in the pradosh after sunset while Purnima lasts, but not during Bhadra (the first half of Purnima, avoided for this rite). When Bhadra covers the evening, almanacs set the fire for when Bhadra ends, or in some years move it to the next evening — which is why Holi dates sometimes differ between calendars.

Common questions

When is Holi 2027?

In New Delhi, Holika Dahan is on Sunday, 21 March 2027 and Holi, the day of colours, on Monday, 22 March 2027. Purnima: 6:22 PM, 21 Mar → 4:14 PM, 22 Mar.

What is the Holika Dahan Muhurat for Holi 2027?

For New Delhi: Bhadra lasts all night (until 5:15 AM, 22 Mar); the fire time is set locally. It is computed from the city's own sunrise and sunset, so other cities differ by a few minutes or more.

Is Holi on the same date in every city?

Mostly, but not everywhere: in 2027 the date differs in Guwahati, Singapore, Sydney, because local sunrise, sunset or moonrise falls on the other side of the tithi change there.

What is Bhadra, and why does it change the Holika Dahan time?

Bhadra is the Vishti karana — here, the first half of the Purnima tithi. The texts avoid it for Holika Dahan, so when Bhadra covers the evening the fire waits until Bhadra ends. If Bhadra runs through the whole night, the Dharmasindhu allows the next evening instead, provided Purnima lasts long enough (three and a half praharas) the next day.
