About the festival
Vasant Panchami falls on the fifth day of the bright fortnight of Magha and is dedicated to Saraswati, the goddess of learning, music and the arts. It is also the traditional start of spring, and yellow — the colour of mustard fields in bloom across the north — is the colour of the day: yellow clothes, yellow flowers, and sweet saffron rice.
Students place their books, pens and instruments before Saraswati and pause their studies for the day; in many homes small children write their first letters (Vidyarambha or Akshar Abhyasam). In Bengal, Odisha and Assam Saraswati Puja is a major community festival, with images installed in schools and neighbourhoods. In Punjab and parts of the north the day is celebrated with kite-flying.
The puja is done in the forenoon. When the Panchami falls across two mornings, the day it covers more of the forenoon is kept, so the festival can begin while Chaturthi is still current at sunrise.
