The tithi changes at the same instant everywhere, but sunrise, sunset, midnight and moonrise are local — so the day a festival falls on can differ between cities, especially abroad.

About the festival

Ganesh Chaturthi, also called Vinayaka Chaturthi, celebrates the birth of Ganesha on the fourth day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada. Ganesha is the remover of obstacles and the god of beginnings, worshipped first in almost every Hindu rite.

Families and neighbourhoods install a clay image of Ganesha with prāṇa pratiṣṭhā at midday — the hour of his birth — and worship it with modak, durva grass and red flowers for one and a half, three, five, seven or ten days. The festival ends with visarjan, the immersion of the image in water, on Anant Chaturdashi for those who keep all ten days. Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh celebrate on the largest scale; the public celebrations in Pune and Mumbai date to the 1890s. Unbaked clay images that dissolve harmlessly are now widely encouraged over plaster of Paris.

Tradition says the Moon should not be looked at on this night. The puja time shown is the madhyāhna window while Chaturthi lasts.

Common questions

When is Ganesh Chaturthi 2027?

In New Delhi, Ganesh Chaturthi 2027 is on Saturday, 4 September 2027. Shukla Chaturthi: 2:19 PM, 3 Sep → 12:26 PM, 4 Sep.

What is the Madhyahna Puja Muhurat for Ganesh Chaturthi 2027?

For New Delhi: 11:04 AM – 12:26 PM. It is computed from the city's own sunrise and sunset, so other cities differ by a few minutes or more.

Is Ganesh Chaturthi on the same date in every city?

Mostly, but not everywhere: in 2027 the date differs in Dubai, London, New York, Toronto, San Francisco Bay Area, because local sunrise, sunset or moonrise falls on the other side of the tithi change there.

Why is the Moon not looked at on Ganesh Chaturthi?

A story in the Puranas tells that the Moon laughed at Ganesha and was cursed, and that Krishna was falsely accused of theft after seeing the Moon on this night. The custom is to avoid looking at it; anyone who does traditionally listens to the story of the Syamantaka jewel. It is a custom of the day, not something to fear.
