About the festival
Guru Purnima, the full moon of Ashadha, is the day to honour one's teachers — spiritual, academic or artistic. It is also called Vyasa Purnima, after the sage Vyasa, who is credited with dividing the Vedas and composing the Mahabharata and the Puranas, and whose birthday it is said to be.
Disciples visit their gurus with flowers, fruit and gifts and touch their feet; monasteries and ashrams hold guru puja; classical musicians and dancers honour the teachers of their gharana. Buddhists keep the same full moon as the day the Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, and Jains as the day Mahavira accepted his first disciple. It also marks the start of Chaturmas, the four-month rainy-season retreat of wandering monks.
The day is the one on which Purnima is current at sunrise and lasts at least three muhūrtas after it; otherwise the previous day is taken.
