Madhyahna Puja Muhurat: Madhyāhna: the middle fifth of the daytime, while the tithi lasts.

How the date is decided

Chaitra Shukla Navami, on the day the Navami covers midday (madhyāhna, the middle fifth of the daytime) — Rama is said to have been born at noon. If it touches midday on two days, the day it covers more of it. Vaishnava and ISKCON calendars instead take the day on which Navami is current at sunrise; when the two differ, both are shown.

The tithi changes at the same instant everywhere, but sunrise, sunset, midnight and moonrise are local — so the day a festival falls on can differ between cities, especially abroad.

About the festival

Ram Navami celebrates the birth of Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu and the hero of the Ramayana, on the ninth day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra. It closes the nine nights of Chaitra Navratri, which begin with the Hindu new year in much of India.

Rama is said to have been born at midday, so the main worship is at madhyāhna: a small image of the infant Rama is placed in a cradle, the birth is announced with conch shells and bells, and the Ramcharitmanas or Ramayana is read aloud. Many people fast until midday or through the day. Ayodhya holds the largest celebrations; in south India the day is also kept as the wedding of Rama and Sita, and in many places panakam (a jaggery-and-pepper drink) and kosambari are shared.

Smarta calendars keep the day on which Navami covers midday. Vaishnava and ISKCON calendars use the Navami current at sunrise; in some years the two fall on consecutive days and both are listed.

What is the Madhyahna Puja Muhurat for Ram Navami 2027?

Is Ram Navami on the same date in every city?

Mostly, but not everywhere: in 2027 the date differs in London, New York, Toronto, San Francisco Bay Area, because local sunrise, sunset or moonrise falls on the other side of the tithi change there.

Why do some calendars show Ram Navami on two days?

Because two rules are in use. The Smarta rule takes the day the Navami tithi covers midday, the time of Rama's birth. Vaishnava calendars, including ISKCON, take the day on which Navami is current at sunrise. When Navami begins late in the morning, the two rules pick consecutive days.
